Townsville Resident Turns 104
Ozcare Day Respite Centre is hosting a grand morning tea, to celebrate the 104th birthday of Pearl Hatfield who has lived in Townsville for most of her life. Ozcare Co-ordinator, Ruth Girling-King said that Pearl’s family and friends were coming to the party and they planned to put lots of candles on a very large cake to mark the occasion. “Pearl has been coming to the Centre for around six years and we all really enjoy her company - she is much loved and very popular with everyone. “Pearl has a bright, warm personality and she brings a smile to everyone’s face – everyone knows Pearl,” Ms Girling-King said. Pearl’s family, including her son Paul, his wife Lorraine and two grandchildren will be helping her celebrate her birthday. Pearl was born in Charters Towers and moved to Townsville when she was 10 years old. She attended West End State School, followed by Townsville Technical College, and had private music tuition in piano. In 1941, she married Henry James Hatfield who joined the army and fought in the war in New Guinea. Unfortunately, Pearl’s husband became ill and passed away in 1944. Pearl worked for her father as a book keeper for many years and was a founding member of the “War Widows”. She still has a great interest in gardening and music. At Pearl’s 100th birthday, she said that she has never taken much medication – only her vitamins, and she put her long life down to “Good food – no rubbish”. |
