Flu Alert

Autumn is the time to take preventative steps to avoid the impact of the spread of flu throughout the community.

The Government has issued recommendations that with flu season looming, employers should adopt precautionary measures to better manage the impact of flu in the workplace, to avoid staff illness and loss of productivity.

Employers are advised to consider influenza vaccination programs for employees in the lead up to this flu season to reduce sick leave and absenteeism.

The impact of influenza in the workplace can cause as many as 1 in 5 people to be absent from work.

Vaccination before the beginning of the season provides good protection and prevents spread of the virus throughout the workplace and the community.

Ozcare, a leading not-for-profit organisation that delivers health and human services in Queensland, is setting an example by offering flu shots to all of its 2,300 staff, free of charge.

Ozcare’s State Director of Community Health Clare Guilfoyle said that now is the time to immunise to beat the flu season and stay healthy for winter.

“Immunisation reduces the spread of influenza, saves downtime and the costs of illness, and provides a boost to staff morale.

“Vaccines need to be given each year, because the viruses are always changing,” Ms Guilfoyle said.

Ozcare Community Nursing services operate throughout the Brisbane Metropolitan area and conduct safe, effective flu clinics in the workplace.

Clinical Nurse Manager, Nathan Williamson, said that Ozcare is a Government approved immunisation provider with experienced teams.

“We use only our own Nurse Immunisers and a process to make immunising easy and efficient.

“It is a simple process to arrange for Ozcare’s Immunisation endorsed registered nurses to visit local workplaces to immunise staff.

“Staff can be immunised for influenza with minimal disruption to daily routines – it’s easy to organise, convenient, saves valuable time and those immunised feel that they are valued,” Mr Williamson said.
