What is the difference between an Aged Care Facility and a Nursing Home?

The introduction of the Commonwealth Aged Care Act in 1997 meant that both Nursing Homes and Hostels became known as Aged Care Facilities. Two types of facilities, Low Care and High Care, are available.  Specialist care for those with dementia is available in most Ozcare Aged Care facilities.

What procedures are involved for entry into a Low or High Care Facility?

Residents must be assessed by the Aged Care Assessment Team before they can enter a Low Care or High Care Facility. All of Ozcare’s facilities have a Low Care and High Care section. This enables residents transferring from Low Care to High Care to remain in contact with their friends in the facility and the staff with whom they are already familiar and comfortable.

What does a Low Care Facility provide?

Low Care Facilities provide residents with assistance in daily activities such as showering, dressing, provision of meals and medication management. Ozcare has registered nurses available to provide appropriate nursing services in all our Low Care Facilities. If residents’ needs increase, the Ageing in Place system enables residents to remain within the facility for as long as their needs can be met.

What is Ageing in Place?

All of Ozcare's Low Care Facilities are co-located with a High Care Facility to allow ageing in place. Residents can transfer from Low Care to High Care within the facility. This enables residents to remain in contact with their friends as well as staff with whom they are already familiar and comfortable with.

What does a High Care Facility provide?

High Care Facilities provide residents with a higher level of care and assistance. Ozcare High Care Facilities have nursing staff (including registered nurses) available 24 hours a day. When required, full assistance is given in the areas of medication administration, clinical nursing, assistance with feeding, toileting and continence management. Total emphasis is placed on the comfort and well being of residents.

What is Special Care?

Ozcare provide specialised care for residents with Dementia and associated challenging behaviours. Our staff are thoroughly trained and provide care in a compassionate and professional manner. Our Special Care Units are designed to provide complete safety for those suffering from Dementia while maintaining a pleasant and home like environment.
