Call for Participants - Stand Up for Mental Health in Mackay

We’re excited to announce that we’ve teamed up with WISE Stand Up for Mental Health to give people living with a mental illness in Mackay the chance to build confidence, share their stores, and hope for the future – all through the medium of comedy.

This free program, led by David Granirer, a counsellor and stand-up comic who himself lives with depression, is about giving you a voice, with the idea is that laughing at our setbacks raises us above them.

You’ll learn how to craft a comedy routine during two hour training sessions each week at Central Queensland University between Monday 8 August and Monday 24 October, benefit from one-on-one sessions with David, and go on to perform your act in a final showcase on Friday 28 October at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre (MECC).

Stand Up for Mental Health aims to raise awareness and reduce public stigma around mental illness, whilst spreading a message of hope and empowerment.

This program is free and open to anyone in Mackay who is living with a mental illness, and meets the criteria below. Register today!

This program will not have been possible without the help of our sponsors:

  • Central Queensland University
  • Think Office Technology
  • Mackay Regional Council
  • Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre
  • Mental Illness Fellowship North Queensland (MIFNQ)

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Take part in weekly 2 hour classes via Skype beginning early August. In addition, David works with each comic individually via phone and email to help you figure out what to write about, how to write your act and general coaching on stand-up comedy. Your final act will be between 3-5 minutes. Don’t worry if you have a problem memorizing because you can use cheat-sheets on stage.

HOW DOES THE SHOW WORK?
The show will be 60-90 minutes in total. David will run and MC the show.

CRITERIA
Participants must be:

  • Living with a mental illness
  • Have stable housing
  • A support system
  • Be in recovery
  • Be capable of sitting in class and paying attention
  • Be able to read and write in English (grammar and spelling don’t matter)
  • Have access to email, phone, and Skype
  • Have the motivation and desire to create healthy change
  • And above all else, have a desire to do stand-up comedy

BUT I’VE NEVER DONE STAND-UP COMEDY!
Don’t worry! David has turned dozens of mental health consumers into stand-up comics and he will do the same for you. Go to www.standupformentalhealth.com to see testimonials and video footage of them.

Also, David’s guarantee to you is: “I will do whatever it takes to make sure that you succeed!” You’ll not only have an amazing experience, but you’ll also get to reduce public stigma around mental illness and have some great laughs. People with mental illness are always being told what they can’t do. In this show, they get to prove what they CAN do!
