Let us introduce you to Reg, a Level 4 Home Care Package Client at Ozcare Gold Coast and tell you about how he rediscovered his love of dance again with the help of Lindsay Taylor, our Occupational Therapist (OT).
Reg has always loved dancing and he first met his good friend Marie when they attended the same dance class, many years ago.
When Reg was no longer able to remain living alone in his home, Marie offered for Reg to move in with her and became his devoted carer.
Due to his Parkinson’s Disease, Reg is unable to dance like he used to. His movements have slowed and stiffened and he requires a 4-wheeled walker to mobilise safely.
Reg and Marie miss being able to dance together and it was during an Occupational Therapy Assessment that Lindsay discovered Reg’s desire to dance again.
Lindsay discussed with Marie and Reg the option of running a dance program for them in the comfort and privacy of their own home.
She explained the program would have the added benefit of managing Reg’s Parkinson’s symptoms in a fun and engaging way as well as meeting his goal of returning to dance.
During the first session, Lindsay guided Reg and Marie through a seated couple’s dance routine to the timeless lyrics of ‘Mr. Sandman’ and ‘Cheek to Cheek.’ Reg was a little reluctant at first but by the end of the session he was smiling, happy and looking forward to doing it all again the following week. Since then we have received glowing feedback from Marie and Reg about this service.
Lindsay feels everyone can benefit from dance.
“When you dance, you get out of your head. You let go,” said Lindsay.
“It is just such a beautiful outlet for anyone to enjoy, no matter their abilities or disabilities.”
As well as being a qualified Occupational Therapist, Lindsay has a background as a trained ballet dancer of 18 years including performing lead roles, choreographing, and teaching dance to all ages in America and Australia.
Lindsay is a wonderful asset to our Gold Coast team as she is able to offer a unique service which focuses on encouraging clients to find enjoyment and improve their quality of life with fun, music and movement in the safety of their own homes.
