Ozcare Loves Our Volunteers - National Volunteer Week, 20-26 May 2019

This National Volunteer Week, 20-26 May 2019, we took the opportunity to thank the more than 400 volunteers who generously donate their time across over 30 services throughout Ozcare.

Our volunteers greatly assist our staff and help brighten the lives of our clients, and for this we are very grateful.

Services thanked volunteers with a morning tea and presented them with a gift as a small token of our appreciation.

To shine a light on the high calibre of volunteers we are lucky enough to have at Ozcare, we would like to share the story of Angela McDonald, volunteer at Ozanam Villa Clontarf and nominee for the 2019 Queensland Volunteering Awards.

Angela’s Story

Angela McDonald has been volunteering at Ozanam Villa Aged Care Facility in Clontarf for the past three years. Volunteering with us every Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, she is always on standby to help if we need an extra pair of hands.

A very spiritual person, Angela is known for bringing a lot of comfort to our residents and their families in times of need. Angela’s first language is Italian, which has been extremely beneficial to us in communicating with residents that only speak Italian.

Angela’s attitude to life is “Spread love to everyone, love surpasses everything.” This positive, loving attitude flows outward from Angela as she goes about her volunteering activities at Ozanam Villa.

As well as helping out with activities and assisting with Church services, Angela can often be seen visiting residents’ rooms and sitting down and talking with residents, singing to them, and making them smile, in fact, Angela makes everyone around her smile.

Prior to Ozcare, Angela was a Chaplain, and we are fortunate enough that she is able to use her extensive skills and experience to benefit our residents and their families. She brings great comfort in times of sadness by praying with our palliative residents and their families.

Angela is experienced in dementia care and spends a lot of time in our Wattle Wing (special care) talking with our residents living with dementia, helping them to calm down if they are upset or unsettled, and generally bringing warmth and comfort to our facility.

Angela always has time and loving compassion for those who are most vulnerable, visiting bed bound residents, taking residents in wheelchairs for walks; she continuously brings light to those around her.

We are constantly inspired by Angela’s energy, warmth and beautiful nature. She singlehandedly spreads happiness throughout our facility, and we are very thankful to have her as part of our big family at Ozanam Villa Clontarf.
