Spring Ozheart Winner - Kate Adams

Spring Ozheart Winner - Kate Adams

Kate is our first Ozheart winner on the Sunshine Coast and a very worthy recipient.

Kate was blown away when we rang on a Friday afternoon after she had just finished work to tell her she had won. She responded with, “It’s so exciting because I never do my job expecting to receive anything like this – I just love what I do.”

Which is exactly why Kate is an Ozheart! Kate was put forward for the award by one of her clients in a very heart-felt nomination.

This client acknowledged that whilst most Ozcare staff deserve commendation for working hard at their role as carers and helpers - a great compliment for our Sunshine Coast community care team – she had taken the time to nominate Kate because her work is exceptional.

She went on to say that from the moment Kate arrives to when she leaves, her cheerful disposition makes it evident she really loves her job.

This client has great difficulty communicating; she is unable to speak, and often suffers from panic attacks, particularly when she knows she is going to be surrounded by strangers like in a shopping centre environment.

At these times, when her behaviour is often misinterpreted as aggression, Kate is understanding and never passes judgement, instead she provides support with kindness and warm expressions of reassurance.

Kate is reported to be flexible within the limitations of what her job permits and always keen to please. This client feels Kate is very in tune with her needs and wants, not taking over tasks she can easily perform herself, yet not failing to use discernment for when she needs help.

Kate makes her clients feel safe and secure; she drives carefully, is aware of her surroundings and quick to identify potential hazards to her clients, she even put aside her own fear of water to take this client swimming in the pool.

The nomination speaks volumes about the kind of person Kate is and the positive impact she has had. Kate’s ability to understand the pain of loneliness and isolation, especially when it is compounded by an inability to engage in verbal communication, has led this client to gratefully tell us that, “Kate is everything a person could wish for in a carer.”

Congratulations Kate!
