A client who benefits from Ozcare's NDIS, disability and health services in Queensland

What is NDIS?

National Disability Insurance Scheme

The NDIS is a new way of providing individualised support for eligible people with a permanent and significant disability, their families, and carers.

If you are aged under 65 years old (or under 50 years for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders) and satisfy the eligibility criteria, the NDIS will provide you with the reasonable and necessary supports you need to enjoy life.

Through the NDIS, you can:

  • Access mainstream services and supports
  • Access community services and supports
  • Maintain informal support arrangements
  • Receive reasonable and necessary funded supports

These supports will help you to achieve your goals, which might involve:

  • Independence
  • Community involvement
  • Education
  • Employment
  • Health & wellbeing

As an insurance scheme, the NDIS takes a lifetime approach, investing in people with disability early to improve your outcomes later in life.

The NDIS gives all Australians peace of mind; that if their child or loved one is born with or acquires a permanent and significant disability, they will get the support they need.

The NDIS is a big change, and has been trialed in a number of areas since 2013 to make sure the scheme works well and is sustainable.

Queensland NDIS Rollout Dates

On 1 July 2016, the NDIS rollout officially began in Queensland for people under the age of 18 living in Townsville and Charters Towers. Over the next three years, the NDIS will be made available in different areas around Queensland, with everyone able to access NDIS by 30 June 2019.

NDIS Assessment

In order to start receiving NDIS services you need to have your eligibility assessed by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).

You can usually start this process six months before the planned roll out date in your area, so you can have your approval ready and services in place as soon as possible.  You can use our NDIS initial planning meeting checklist to help you prepare.

The upcoming roll out dates are above. If you live in any of these areas, call us now on 1800 Ozcare (1800 692 273) to start your NDIS registration and find out if you’re eligible.
